A little while back I wrote an article on the Phantom 4 being a Typhoon H killer, it made its rounds on the Internet and I was flamed a little by fans of Yuneec. But now the Phantom 4 is out and people have had a play, do I still think the Phantom 4 has/will/can knock the Typhoon H out of the sky in terms of being the best?
Well, as it stands, I still believe the Phantom 4 is better in almost every aspect. Lets looks at some pros and cons of each product and discuss it a little more.
Yuneec Typhoon H:
Has retractable landing gear.
RC has a 7″ touchscreen built in.
360 degree gimbal/camera.
It has 6 rotors.
Foldable arms for portability.
Reduced price ( likely to compete with DJI ) of $1300.
Only one battery included in the lower price not 2 as previously advertised.
Limited to 22mph
Coded with a 400 foot max height ( from takeoff ) limit.
No GLONASS ( some say yes and some say no so for not its a NO )
Needs the transmitter to be able to follow you ( although a limited offer of a FREE “Wizard” remote allows a follow me feature ).
Limited to about 1 mile range due to using WiFi
25 minute stated battery life. Likely lower in the real world.
Object avoidance uses ultrasonic as standard.
A low spec camera that’s had bad reviews on another Yuneec product.
As of today ( 17-03-16 ) it’s still 4-6 weeks away fro anyone shands.
DJI Phantom 4:
45mph maximum top speed.
3+ mile range stock.
Small and portable like its predecessors.
28 minutes stated flight time. This time has been verified by users in the field ).
Great camera that’s improved over the Phantom 3.
Only 4 rotors.
No 360 degree gimbal/camera
No retractable landing gear.
From listing the pro and cons it does not really show how one can be that much better than the other, for coming to that kind of conclusion I have had to look at it from a different angle.
So, why do I still think the Phantom will come out on top? Well, partly because the Phantom is a mature and proven product. DJI did not bother faking its launch information and just showed the world what the Phantom 4 can do. Its also now shipped into the hands of users and no one has yet come out saying a promised feature does not work as advertised.
We have seen another product come along trying to claim the top spot feature wise over the DJI Phantom and that was the SOLO. When it finally arrived in the hands of users and they got the gimbal, results are not that great. I see the same with Yuneec, their ambition is exceeding their ability at the moment. I think anyone can build a drone ( even homebrews are very good ) but it takes a LOT of experience in many many different aspects of the technology to bring out a good product.
The simple reality is, just like Apple/Samsung with their phones, DJI just have so much resources at their disposal that its going to be very hard for another company to just jump in and made a killer product to knock the Phantom off its pedestal.
Oh, and IF someone at Yuneec read this and think differently, send me one and I will happily compare them and give my honest opinion.
Bring on the flame 🙂
