It looks like it’s that time of Year again when DJI Announce a new range of super cool products. Highly anticipated is the new DJI Phantom 4, the successor to the hugely popular Phantom 3 quadcopter.
So what do we know about the Phantom 4? In truth very little. All we really have is best guesses or educated guesses based on how the market is going at the moment. Here are some of the most likely changes from its predecessor.
1: Better battery with longer flight time. Hopefully not temperature issue like the P3 one. Along with this could be more efficient motors and ESC’s
2: Stronger airframe, maybe carbon fiber as an option. The issue with cracking on the P3 because a smear on its status as a brilliant bit of kit.
3: Object avoidance. Its something announced by Yuneec at CES with the Typhoon and DJI already have something similar with the Matrice 100.
4: A follow me that does not require the RC. Maybe some small device that can be worn by the person that needs to be followed. Another option would be an app for smartphone that allows the Phantom to track the phone via GPS.
5: Better/Updated camera. There have been rumors and “leaked” photos of an apparent 6K camera but I think this is a Photoshop job 🙂
6: A move from 4 props to 6 making the P4 the first Phantom Hexacopter. I was going to put this in the less likely list but considering Yuncee have gone this route, it’s not ridiculous that DJI would also.
7: Multiple colors. As ghastly as I think this idea would be, the trend with companies making different color versions of their devices is strong. DJI could decide to go this way. Me, I will be sticking with white 🙂
Some other ideas that are less likely are as follows:
1: Support to carry the X5 camera. I have an Inspire 1 Pro and the X5 weight almost as much as a Phantom 3 minus the battery so I doubt an airframe similar to the Phantom could cope with it and on top of this, the battery would need to be much more powerful.
2: Optical zoom. As dooable as this might well be, I don’t think we will see this on a P4.
3: Folding landing gear. The Inspire and Pro class s1000 have this so maybe it could come to the Phantom. But if it did, a 360 degree gimbal would be required.
4: Lightbridge 2 – Again, not likely due to the fact its new and costs a lot.. Took a long time for the LB1 to filter down to the Phantom.
So, we will need to wait until March to find out exactly what DJI will announce. Maybe its nothing more than a new attachment for the Osmo 🙂
