UPDATE 1: Osmo Battery life improvement on the way?

by 9to5dji

UPDATE 1: Looks like DJI have added the FAQ regarding the performance changes in the next battery back on the site ( maybe they read this, hello DJI ๐Ÿ™‚ ). So it really does look like there will be some battery use optimization coming soon. I hear that its gets about 20% performance increase bringing the run time towards the 60 minutes advertised originally but under delivered in the final product.
There are some other interesting items in the FAQ too. The one about a bigger battery gets a simple answer;
Is there going to be a new battery that features a larger capacity?
Also I always wondered why the rosette mount got hot, turns out its a heatsink ( that uses the phone mount too ).
Why does the rosette mount of the Osmo get hot when I use it for a while? What can I do in this situation?

Being an eagle eyed person that I am, today I noticed DJI updated then removed an FAQ on their Osmo webpage. Nothing too interesting I hear you say.. But look what it said.

The FAQ first appeared with the following quotation and answer.

If I change the Osmo’s camera to the Zenmuse X5 or the Zenmuse X5R, will the maximum operating time of the Osmo be affected?
Yes, but we are in the process of developing a new firmware for extending the operating time of the Osmo when using the Zenmuse X5/Zenmuse X5R.

Soon after the entire section was removed.. I know many have moaned about the battery life so maybe this is a clue that the next firmware will include some performance increase in the battery ๐Ÿ™‚

I would not get hopes up to much about the “Osmo Pro”, general cocisis is that it references the support for X5 and X5R camera. BUT, DJI do have two new products on the go codenamed “KUMQUAT” and “DURIAN” so one could well be an “Osmo 2” or “Pro” and announced at NAB maybe. I am fairly sure one is the Inspire 2 though ๐Ÿ˜‰

Awesome thanks for the reply! Do you think they would announce an OSMO 2 so soon after the first?

I’m tempted by the spring sale pricing, but this whole OSMO Pro thing has me wondering.. The X5(R) is out of my budget anyways so not bothered about them, and this is probably what the “pro” refers to..

The main thing holding me off at the moment is the horizon tilt issues i’m reading about.. not sure whether to bite the bullet and enjoy it and wait for a firmware fix, or what to do really ๐Ÿ™

I would not be surprised if they did bring a pro version out so soon, DJI are very aggressive with products lately. But I see no concrete info pointing to anything soon as it stands now.

The next firmware for the Osmo fixes a lot of the issues people had ( gimbal drift, horizon ) and brings in the battery improvement as well as some other things people will have noticed like Fan control. Should be out soon I think as its been through so many test version recently ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you are really not sure I would wait and see what people say when the update comes and maybe, if you can wait until NAB to be sure no new version comes out.

Ok I’m going to trust you on the firmware update! Are you a beta tester? You seem to know quite a bit which I haven’t been able to find elsewhere! feel free to mail me at aaelex at gmail dotcom if you would rather discus privately ๐Ÿ˜‰

but thanks for the advice! got an upcoming trip I wanted the OSMO for hence the rush, so I think I may just bite the bullet on this one and just enjoy it. I personally suspect (hope) the “pro” will just be a new handle for the X5/X5R with improved battery etc. and that this is the new product along with the inspire 2.

Thanks for sharing the info thus far!
